Find the equation of the ellipse with centre (-2, 1), whose major axis runs from (-2, 6) to (-2, -4) and which has a focus at (-2, 5).

  1. (x-2)²/25 + (y+1)²/16 = 1
  2. (x+2)²/25 + (y-1)²/9 = 1
  3. (x-2)²/9 + (y+1)²/25 = 1
  4. (x+2)²/9 + (y-1)²/25 = 1

Correct answer: (x+2)²/9 + (y-1)²/25 = 1

Solution

Major axis length 10 gives a = 5; focus distance c = 4 gives b² = 25 - 16 = 9, so the equation is (x+2)²/9 + (y-1)²/25 = 1.
