An ellipse has foci S(5, 12) and S'(-12, 5) and passes through the origin. Find its eccentricity.

  1. 1/2
  2. 1/sqrt(3)
  3. 1/sqrt(2)
  4. 2/3

Correct answer: 1/sqrt(2)

Solution

From the origin both focal distances are 13, giving 2a = 26; the foci are 2c = 13*sqrt(2) apart, so e = c/a = 1/sqrt(2).
