Let C be the circle with centre (0, 1) and radius 1, and let P be the parabola y = a*x². Find the set of values of 'a' for which the circle and parabola intersect at a point other than the origin.

  1. a > 1/2
  2. a belongs to (0, 1/2)
  3. (1/4, 1/2)
  4. (1/2, infinity) only excluding integers

Correct answer: a > 1/2

Solution

Apart from y = 0 (the origin), the other intersection has y = 2 - 1/a, which is positive only when a > 1/2.
