If (3, 4) and (8, 6) are the foci of an ellipse that passes through the origin, find the eccentricity of the ellipse.

  1. sqrt(29)/15
  2. sqrt(29)/16
  3. sqrt(29)/5
  4. sqrt(29)/12

Correct answer: sqrt(29)/15

Solution

2c = distance between foci = sqrt(29); for an ellipse 2a = sum of focal distances from a point on it = 5 + 10 = 15, so e = 2c/2a = sqrt(29)/15.
