If set A has 4 elements and set B has 2 elements, then how many subsets of the Cartesian product A × B contain at least 3 elements?

  1. 275
  2. 510
  3. 219
  4. 256

Correct answer: 219

Solution

A x B has 4*2 = 8 elements. Subsets of an 8-element set with at least 3 elements = 2^8 - C(8,0) - C(8,1) - C(8,2) = 256 - 1 - 8 - 28 = 219.
