Define f(x)=((e^x-1)²)/(sin(x/a) log(1+x/4)) for x≠ 0, and set f(0)=12. If f is continuous at x=0, what is the value of a?

  1. 1
  2. -1
  3. 2
  4. 3

Correct answer: 3

Solution

As x->0, (e^x-1)^2 ~ x^2 and sin(x/a)log(1+x/4) ~ (x/a)(x/4) = x^2/(4a), so the limit is 4a. Continuity needs 4a = 12, hence a = 3.
