Given that ∑_(i=1)⁹(x_i-5)=9 and ∑_(i=1)⁹(x_i-5)²=45, what is the standard deviation of the nine values x₁, x₂, …, x₉?

  1. 9
  2. 4
  3. 3
  4. 2

Correct answer: 2

Solution

With d=x-5: var = (sum d^2)/n - ((sum d)/n)^2 = 45/9 - (9/9)^2 = 5 - 1 = 4. So SD = sqrt(4) = 2.
