If a, b, c form a geometric progression, and x and y are the arithmetic means inserted between a and b, and between b and c respectively, then the value of a/x + c/y is:
- 0
- 1
- 2
- 1/2
Correct answer: 2
Solution
With x=(a+b)/2 and y=(b+c)/2, a/x + c/y = 2a/(a+b) + 2c/(b+c). Using b^2=ac this simplifies to 2.
