Arrange the following alkenes in increasing order of stability: (I) CH3-CH=CH-CH3 (but-2-ene, disubstituted) (II) (CH3)3C-C(CH3)=C(CH3)- type tetrasubstituted alkene (III) CH3-C(CH3)=CH2 (isobutylene, disubstituted at one carbon) (IV) CH3-C(CH3)=CH-CH3 (trisubstituted alkene)
- (A) I < III < IV < II
- (B) I < II < III < IV
- (C) I < IV < III < I
- (D) II < III < IV < I
Correct answer: (A) I < III < IV < II
Solution
Stability order of alkenes: tetrasubstituted > trisubstituted > disubstituted > monosubstituted. Here II is tetrasubstituted (most stable), IV is trisubstituted, while I and III are disubstituted. Among the disubstituted ones, the internal/more symmetric trend places I lowest, giving the increasing order I < III < IV < II.
