For the redox reaction A(s) + 2B+(aq) -> A2+(aq) + 2B(s), the equilibrium constant Kc is found to be 10¹² at 298 K. Determine the standard cell potential E°cell.
- 0.354 V
- 0.708 V
- 0.0098 V
- 1.36 V
Correct answer: 0.354 V
Solution
At equilibrium the standard cell potential is linked to the equilibrium constant by E°cell = (0.059/n) log Kc. With n = 2 and log(10¹²) = 12, E°cell = (0.059/2) * 12 = 0.0295 * 12 = 0.354 V.
