When 500 mL of a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution is fully decomposed it yields 2 mol of H2O. Calculate the volume strength of this H2O2 solution. (2 H2O2 -> 2 H2O + O2; molar volume of gas at STP = 22.4 L/mol.)

Correct answer: 44.8 V

Solution

2 mol H2O implies 2 mol H2O2 decomposed, releasing 1 mol O2 = 22.4 L from 500 mL solution; per mL that is 44.8 mL O2, i.e. 44.8 volume strength.
