The radioactive isotope ⁶⁰Co₂₇ which is used in the treatment of cancer can be made by (n, p) reaction. For this reaction the target nucleus is:

Solution

The (n, p) reaction involves the absorption of a neutron and the emission of a proton. Therefore, the target nucleus must have one more proton than the resulting nucleus. Since ⁶⁰Co₂₇ has 27 protons, the target nucleus must have 28 protons, which is ⁵⁹Ni₂₈.
