Values of dissociation constant, Kₐ are given as follows: Acid — Kₐ HCN — 6.2 × 10⁻¹⁰ HF — 7.2 × 10⁻⁴ HNO₂ — 4.0 × 10⁻⁴ Correct order of increasing base strength of the base CN⁻, F⁻ and NO₂⁻ will be:

  1. F⁻ < CN⁻ < NO₂⁻
  2. NO₂⁻ < CN⁻ < F⁻
  3. F⁻ < NO₂⁻ < CN⁻
  4. NO₂⁻ < F⁻ < CN⁻

Correct answer: F⁻ < NO₂⁻ < CN⁻

Solution

The base strength of the conjugate bases is inversely related to the strength of their corresponding acids; thus, the weaker the acid (higher Kₐ value), the stronger the base. Since HF is the strongest acid among the three, F⁻ is the weakest base, followed by NO₂⁻ from HNO₂, and CN⁻ from HCN, which is the strongest base.
