The effect of addition of helium gas to the following reaction in equilibrium state, is PCl5(g) ⇌ PCl3(g) + Cl2(g)

  1. the equilibrium will go backward due to suppression of dissociation of PCl5
  2. addition of helium will not affect the equilibrium
  3. the equilibrium will shift in the forward direction and more of Cl2 and PCl3 gases will be produced
  4. helium will deactivate PCl5 and reaction will stop

Correct answer: the equilibrium will shift in the forward direction and more of Cl2 and PCl3 gases will be produced

Solution

The addition of helium gas, an inert gas, increases the total pressure of the system without changing the partial pressures of the reactants and products. This results in a shift of the equilibrium position towards the side with more moles of gas, which in this case is the forward direction, producing more PCl3 and Cl2.
