A binary compound, atoms of element A form a ccp structure and those of element M occupy 2/3 of the tetrahedral voids of the hcp structure. The formula of the binary compound is:
- M2A3
- M4A3
- M4A
- MA3
Correct answer: M4A3
Solution
For N atoms of A in a close-packed lattice there are 2N tetrahedral voids; M fills 2/3 of them = 4N/3. So M:A = 4N/3 : N = 4:3, giving the formula M4A3.
