Consider the following reaction:
C2H5OH + H2SO4 → Product
Among the following, which one cannot be formed as a product under any conditions ?
- Ethylene
- Acetylene
- Diethyl ether
- Ethylhydrogen sulphate
Correct answer: Acetylene
Solution
With conc. H2SO4 ethanol gives ethyl hydrogen sulphate (cold), diethyl ether (~140 C) and ethylene (~170 C). Acetylene (C2H2) cannot be produced from ethanol with sulphuric acid under any condition.
