When phenol is treated first with concentrated sulphuric acid and then with concentrated nitric acid, the product formed is

Correct answer: 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene

Solution

Phenol with conc. H2SO4 then conc. HNO3 gives 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid), so the trinitro product is the answer rather than mono-nitrophenol.
