An electrolytic cell is filled with aqueous Ag2SO4 and fitted with platinum electrodes. Electrolysis is continued until 1.6 g of O2 is evolved at the anode. How much silver will be deposited at the cathode?
- 107.88 g
- 1.6 g
- 0.8 g
- 21.60 g
Correct answer: 21.60 g
Solution
1.6 g O2 = 0.05 mol = 0.2 mol electrons (O2 needs 4e-). Ag+ + e- -> Ag, so 0.2 mol Ag deposit = 0.2 x 107.88 = 21.6 g.
