Why is carbon monoxide (CO) dangerous to humans?
- It produces carbolic acid in the body
- It leads to an increased level of carbon dioxide
- It causes cancer
- It binds to haemoglobin and competes with oxygen
Correct answer: It binds to haemoglobin and competes with oxygen
Solution
CO is dangerous because it binds haemoglobin much more strongly than oxygen, forming carboxyhaemoglobin and starving tissues of O2. It is not a carcinogen.
