ExamsJEE AdvancedPhysics

A massless conical flask whose base is wider than its top is filled with a liquid and placed on a table in vacuum. Let W1 be the force the liquid exerts on the base of the flask and W2 be the force the flask exerts on the table. Choose the correct statement.

  1. W1 = W2
  2. W1 > W2
  3. W1 < W2
  4. The force exerted by the liquid on the walls of the flask is (W1 - W2).

Correct answer: W1 > W2

Solution

For a flask with a wide base tapering upward, the downward pressure force on the base exceeds the weight of the liquid (hydrostatic paradox). The slanted walls push up on the liquid, so the table only supports the true weight.
