Consider the two statements below and choose the correct option: (i) A body floating in a liquid displaces a volume of liquid whose weight equals the body's own weight. (ii) A body that sinks in a liquid displaces a volume of liquid equal to the body's own volume.

  1. (A) (i) is true but (ii) is false.
  2. (B) (i) is false but (ii) is true.
  3. (C) Both (i) and (ii) are true.
  4. (D) Both (i) and (ii) are false.

Correct answer: (C) Both (i) and (ii) are true.

Solution

A floating body is in equilibrium, so the buoyant force equals its weight; the buoyant force equals the weight of the displaced liquid, hence (i) is true. A fully submerged (sunk) body occupies and therefore displaces a volume of liquid exactly equal to its own volume, hence (ii) is true.
