In a flowing river the speed of the water layer increases linearly with height above the bed. If the layer at 10 cm above the bottom moves at 20 cm/s, what is the speed of the layer at 40 cm above the bottom?

  1. 10 cm/s
  2. 20 cm/s
  3. 30 cm/s
  4. 80 cm/s

Correct answer: 80 cm/s

Solution

With a linear velocity profile, v is proportional to height y. The gradient = 20/10 = 2 (cm/s)/cm. At y = 40 cm, v = 2 * 40 = 80 cm/s.
