A wooden cube of edge a and density rho floats in water of density 2*rho. Its bottom face just rests on the free end of an unstretched massless spring (force constant K) fixed to the base of the vessel. What weight W must be placed on the cube so that it becomes fully submerged (without the weight getting wet)?

  1. a(a²*rho*g + K)
  2. a(a*rho*g + 2K)
  3. a( a*rho*g/2 + 2K)
  4. a( a²*rho*g + K/2)

Correct answer: a( a²*rho*g + K/2)

Solution

The cube initially floats half-submerged. To submerge it completely it must descend by a/2, compressing the spring by a/2. The added weight must overcome both the extra buoyancy and the upward spring force.
