A cube of aluminium (bulk modulus B = -V dP/dV = 70 GPa) has an edge of 1 m at the Earth's surface. It is then placed on the floor of an ocean 5 km deep. Using average water density 10³ kg/m³ and g = 10 m/s², find the decrease in the cube's edge length, in mm.

  1. 0.24
  2. 0.71
  3. 0.12
  4. 0.48

Correct answer: 0.24

Solution

The pressure increase compresses the cube; the fractional volume drop is deltaP/B, and the fractional change in edge length is one third of that.
