A steel plate of face area 4 cm² and thickness 0.5 cm is rigidly clamped along its lower face. A tangential force of 9.6 N is applied along the upper face. Taking the shear (rigidity) modulus of steel as 8 × 10¹⁰ N/m², determine the lateral (shear) displacement of the upper face.

  1. 1.5 × 10⁻⁹ m
  2. 1.5 × 10⁻⁸ m
  3. 1.5 × 10⁻¹⁰ m
  4. 1.5 × 10⁻⁷ m

Correct answer: 1.5 × 10⁻⁹ m

Solution

Δx = F*L/(A*G) = (9.6 × 0.005)/(4e-4 × 8e10) = 0.048/3.2e7 = 1.5 × 10⁻⁹ m.
