Two immiscible liquids are poured into a U-tube. The densities are rho1 = 1.0 x 10³ kg/m³ and rho2 = 3.0 x 10³ kg/m³. Find the ratio of heights above their common interface, h1/h2.

Correct answer: 3/1

Solution

Equating pressures at the interface gives rho1 * h1 = rho2 * h2, so h1/h2 = rho2/rho1 = 3.0/1.0 = 3.
