A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 5 m/s from point P. Point Q is located 10 m vertically below point P. Find the speed of the ball when it reaches Q. (Take g = 10 m/s², neglect air resistance.)

  1. 10 m/s
  2. 15 m/s
  3. 20 m/s
  4. 5*sqrt(5) m/s

Correct answer: 15 m/s

Solution

Using v² = u² + 2*a*s with u = 5 m/s, a = -10 m/s², s = -10 m gives v² = 25 + 200 = 225, so v = 15 m/s.
