A thin steel ring of inner radius r and cross-sectional area A is fitted onto a wooden disc of radius R (R > r). If Young's modulus of steel is Y, find the tension in the steel ring.

  1. AY(R/r)
  2. AY((R - r)/r)
  3. (Y/A)((R - r)/r)
  4. Yr/(AR)

Correct answer: AY((R - r)/r)

Solution

When the ring is fitted onto the disc, its circumference increases from 2*pi*r to 2*pi*R. Longitudinal strain = (R-r)/r. Stress = Y*(R-r)/r. Tension T = Stress * A = AY*(R-r)/r.
