Two objects of equal mass m are placed at a certain distance d from each other and attract each other with a gravitational force F. If one-third of the mass of one object is transferred to the other object, the new gravitational force between them will be:

  1. 2F / 9
  2. 16F / 9
  3. 8F / 9
  4. F

Correct answer: 8F / 9

Solution

Initial force F = Gm²/d². After transferring m/3 from mass 1 to mass 2: mass 1 = m - m/3 = 2m/3; mass 2 = m + m/3 = 4m/3. New force F' = G*(2m/3)*(4m/3)/d² = G*(8m²/9)/d² = (8/9)*Gm²/d² = 8F/9.
