In a binomial distribution the mean is 4 and the variance is 3. What is its mode?

  1. 5
  2. 4
  3. 3
  4. None of these

Correct answer: 4

Solution

From np = 4 and npq = 3 we get q = 3/4, p = 1/4, n = 16; the mode = floor((n+1)p) = floor(17/4) = 4.
