Find the area of the part of the disc x² + y² = 2 that does NOT belong to the region enclosed between the parabola y² = x and the line y = x.

1. (1/3)(12*pi - 1)
2. (1/6)(12*pi - 1)
3. (1/6)(24*pi - 1)
4. (1/3)(6*pi - 1)

Correct answer: (1/6)(12*pi - 1)

Solution

Disc area is 2*pi; the region between parabola and line is 1/6; subtracting gives (12*pi - 1)/6.
