The hyperbola x²/a² - y²/9 = 1 passes through the point (8, 3*sqrt(3)). The normal to the hyperbola drawn at this point passes through which of the following points?

  1. (15, -2*sqrt(3))
  2. (9, 2*sqrt(3))
  3. (-1, 9*sqrt(3))
  4. (-1, 6*sqrt(3))

Correct answer: (-1, 9*sqrt(3))

Solution

Substituting gives a² = 16; the normal at (8, 3*sqrt(3)) is 2x + sqrt(3)*y = 25, which passes through (-1, 9*sqrt(3)).
