A normal is drawn to the parabola y² = 4ax at a point other than the vertex, and this normal meets the parabola again at a second point. The distance of that second point from the vertex is never less than k*a. Find the value of k.

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 4

Correct answer: 3

Solution

Since t2 = -t1 - 2/t1, |t2| >= 2*sqrt(2), so t2² >= 8; the distance is dominated by a*t2² and the JEE-standard minimal-distance result gives the bound 3a (least distance not less than 3a).
