From the external point P(3, 4), tangents are drawn to the ellipse x²/9 + y²/4 = 1, touching it at A and B. Find the orthocentre of triangle PAB.

  1. (11/5, 8/5)
  2. (5, 8/7)
  3. (7/5, 25/8)
  4. (8/25, 7/5)

Correct answer: (11/5, 8/5)

Solution

The chord of contact AB from P(3,4) is 3x/9 + 4y/4 = 1, i.e. x/3 + y = 1. Working out A, B and the triangle's altitudes gives the orthocentre at (11/5, 8/5).
