A normal chord is drawn to the parabola y² = 4ax at the point where the ordinate equals the abscissa. Find the angle this normal chord subtends at the focus.

  1. pi/4
  2. tan⁻¹(sqrt(2))
  3. tan⁻¹(2)
  4. pi/2

Correct answer: pi/2

Solution

The point with ordinate = abscissa is (4a, 4a) (t = 2); the normal meets the curve again, and the focal angle works out to a right angle.
