In a series of three independent matches, a player can score 0, 2, or 3 points with probabilities 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 respectively. If the probability that the player scores at most 6 points in total across all three matches is p/200, find the sum of the digits of p.

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 4

Correct answer: 4

Solution

P(9) = 0.125, P(8) = 0.225, P(7) = 0.135, so P(<=6) = 1 - 0.485 = 0.515 = 103/200, giving p = 103 and digit sum = 1 + 0 + 3 = 4.
