Three students independently attempt a mathematics problem. Their individual probabilities of solving it are 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 respectively. What is the probability that the problem gets solved by at least one student?
- 1/4
- 1/24
- 23/34
- 3/4
Correct answer: 3/4
Solution
The probability that none of the three students solves the problem is (1/2)(2/3)(3/4) = 6/24 = 1/4, so the probability that at least one solves it is 1 - 1/4 = 3/4.
