Iron halides of the types FeX3 and FeY2 are known to exist. The valid sets of halogens X and Y are:
- x = F, Cl, Br, I and y = F, Cl, Br
- x = F, Cl, Br and y = F, Cl, Br, I
- x = Cl, Br, I and y = F, Cl, Br, I
- x = F, Cl, Br, I and y = F, Cl, Br, I
Correct answer: x = F, Cl, Br and y = F, Cl, Br, I
Solution
All four dihalides (FeF2, FeCl2, FeBr2, FeI2) exist, but among trihalides FeI3 does not exist because I⁻ reduces Fe(3+) to Fe(2+); hence X = F, Cl, Br and Y = F, Cl, Br, I.
