Excess KI is added to a CuSO4 solution and then Na2S2O3 solution is added. Which one of the following statements about this set of reactions is INCORRECT?

  1. CuI2 is the copper product formed
  2. the liberated I2 is reduced
  3. Na2S2O3 acts as a reducing agent and gets oxidised
  4. Cu2I2 (cuprous iodide) is formed

Correct answer: CuI2 is the copper product formed

Solution

Cu(2+) oxidises I- to I2 and is itself reduced to Cu(+), giving white Cu2I2 (not CuI2). Thiosulphate then reduces the liberated I2 and is oxidised to tetrathionate, so 'CuI2 is formed' is the incorrect statement.
