Excess KI is added to a CuSO4 solution and then Na2S2O3 solution is added. Which one of the following statements about this set of reactions is INCORRECT?
- CuI2 is the copper product formed
- the liberated I2 is reduced
- Na2S2O3 acts as a reducing agent and gets oxidised
- Cu2I2 (cuprous iodide) is formed
Correct answer: CuI2 is the copper product formed
Solution
Cu(2+) oxidises I- to I2 and is itself reduced to Cu(+), giving white Cu2I2 (not CuI2). Thiosulphate then reduces the liberated I2 and is oxidised to tetrathionate, so 'CuI2 is formed' is the incorrect statement.
