125 mL of an 8% w/w NaOH solution (specific gravity = 1) is mixed with 125 mL of a 10% w/v HCl solution. What will be the nature of the resulting solution?

  1. Acidic
  2. Basic
  3. Neutral
  4. Cannot be predicted

Correct answer: Acidic

Solution

Moles NaOH = (8/100 * 125)/40 = 0.25 mol; moles HCl = (10/100 * 125)/36.5 = 0.342 mol. HCl is in excess, so the solution is acidic.
