Concentrated nitric acid has density 1.42 g/mL and is 70% w/v in HNO3. What volume (in litres) of dilute nitric acid (density 1.11 g/mL, 20% w/v HNO3) can be made by diluting 50 mL of the concentrated acid with water?

  1. 0.175
  2. 0.25
  3. 0.35
  4. 0.50

Correct answer: 0.175

Solution

Mass of HNO3 in 50 mL conc = 70% w/v (70 g per 100 mL) gives 35 g. The dilute solution at 20% w/v (20 g per 100 mL) holds 35 g in 175 mL = 0.175 L. (Only HNO3 mass is conserved; densities are extra data.)
