A volume of 60 mL of an alcohol solution that is x % alcohol by mass (density = 0.6 g/cm³) is used to prepare 200 cm³ of a 12 % by mass alcohol solution (density = 0.90 g/cm³). Calculate the mass of alcohol (in g) present in the original 60 mL sample.
- 3.6
- 4.8
- 6.0
- 21.6
Correct answer: 21.6
Solution
All the alcohol in the diluted product came from the original sample, so the alcohol mass equals 12% of the final 180 g solution = 21.6 g.
