Let S1 be the solubility of anhydrous AlCl3 and S2 be the solubility of hydrated AlCl3 (AlCl3.6H2O) in diethyl ether. Which relation holds between S1 and S2?

  1. S1 = S2
  2. S1 > S2
  3. S1 < S2
  4. S1 < S2 but not S1 = S2

Correct answer: S1 > S2

Solution

Anhydrous AlCl3 is essentially covalent and electron-deficient, so it dissolves well in low-polarity ether, whereas hydrated AlCl3 is ionic and hydrophilic, dissolving poorly in ether. Hence S1 > S2.
