Two solids dissociate as X(s) ⇌ A(g) + C(g) and Y(s) ⇌ B(g) + C(g). In separate containers, the equilibrium pressure over excess X is 40 mm and the total pressure over excess Y is 60 mm. When excess X and Y are placed together in one container, what is the ratio of moles of A to B in the vapour phase?

  1. 4: 9
  2. 2: 3
  3. 9: 4
  4. 1: 1

Correct answer: 4: 9

Solution

Kp(X) = 20*20 = 400 mm² and Kp(Y) = 30*30 = 900 mm²; in the mixture pA*pC = 400 and pB*pC = 900 with pC = pA + pB, giving pA: pB = 400: 900 = 4: 9.
