5.1 g of solid NH4HS is placed in a 2 litre evacuated flask at 27 deg C, and 20% of the solid decomposes into gaseous NH3 and H2S. The Kp for NH4HS(s) <=> NH3(g) + H2S(g) at 27 deg C is x * 10⁻² (in atm²). Find the integer value of x. [R = 0.082 L atm K⁻¹ mol⁻¹]
- 4
- 5
- 6
- 8
Correct answer: 6
Solution
0.02 mole NH4HS decomposes giving 0.02 mole each of NH3 and H2S. Each partial pressure = nRT/V = 0.02*0.082*300/2 = 0.246 atm, so Kp = 0.246² = 0.0605 atm² = 6.05 * 10⁻², so x = 6.
