Consider the following reaction sequence: CH3-CH=CH-CH3 is first treated with O3 followed by Zn (ozonolysis) to give compound X. X is then treated with (i) NH3 + HCN and (ii) H3O+ (hydrolysis) to give amino acid Y. What is the name of the amino acid Y?
- (A) Leucine
- (B) Valine
- (C) Glycine
- (D) Alanine
Correct answer: (D) Alanine
Solution
Ozonolysis of but-2-ene gives two molecules of ethanal (CH3CHO). Strecker synthesis on ethanal: CH3CHO + NH3 + HCN gives CH3CH(NH2)CN, which on acid hydrolysis gives CH3CH(NH2)COOH, i.e., alanine (2-aminopropanoic acid).
