Which of the following thermal decomposition reactions is written incorrectly?
- Pb(NO3)2 -> PbO2 + 2NO2 + O2/2 (on heating)
- 2NaNO3 -> 2NaNO2 + O2 (on heating)
- Fe2(SO4)3 -> Fe2O3 + 3SO3 (on heating)
- 2NaHCO3 -> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2 (on heating)
Correct answer: Pb(NO3)2 -> PbO2 + 2NO2 + O2/2 (on heating)
Solution
The correct decomposition of lead nitrate: 2Pb(NO3)2 -> 2PbO + 4NO2 + O2. PbO2 would not form under these conditions. Options B, C, D are all correct standard reactions. So option A (which gives PbO2) is wrong.
