In the reaction sequence below, identify the final product Z. CH3CH2OH --[KMnO4]--> X --[(i) SOCl2, (ii) NH3]--> Y --[Br2/NaOH]--> Z

  1. Acetic acid
  2. Acetone
  3. Methyl amine
  4. Ethyl amine

Correct answer: Methyl amine

Solution

CH3CH2OH is oxidised by KMnO4 to CH3COOH (X). Reaction with SOCl2 gives CH3COCl, then NH3 gives CH3CONH2 (Y, acetamide). Hofmann degradation of CH3CONH2 with Br2/NaOH gives CH3NH2 (methyl amine, Z).
