Cyclopropane undergoes the following reactions: (i) with HBr/CCl4 to give product [A]; (ii) with Br2/CCl4 to give product [B]; and [C] converts cyclopropane to propane (CH3CH2CH3). Identify the correct statement(s):
- Compound [B] is cyclopropyl bromide
- Compound [A] is 1-bromopropane
- Compound [B] is 1,3-dibromopropane
- Compound [C] is LAH (lithium aluminium hydride)
Correct answer: Compound [A] is 1-bromopropane
Solution
Cyclopropane undergoes ring-opening reactions: HBr adds across the ring to give 1-bromopropane (A). Br2 in CCl4 adds to give 1,3-dibromopropane (B), not cyclopropyl bromide. Compound C that converts cyclopropane to propane is H2 with a catalyst (hydrogenation), not LAH.
