Statement for Linked Answer Questions 78 and 79: A steel bar of size 10 × 50 mm is cantilevered with two M12 bolts (P and Q) to support a static load of 4 kN, as shown in the figure.
- 2 kN, 20 kN
- 20 kN, 2 kN
- 20 kN, 0 kN
- 0 kN, 20 kN
Correct answer: 20 kN, 2 kN
Solution
In a two-bolt cantilever connection, the external load creates both direct shear and a moment, so the bolt forces are not equal. The bolt group equilibrium and moment distribution lead to a larger force in one bolt and a smaller force in the other. The correct pair is 20 kN and 2 kN.
